Ferlis "Big E" Ellis Jr.

February 17, 1964 — August 2, 2025

Lubbock

Ferlis "Big E" Ellis Jr. was born on February 17, 1964, in Houston, Texas, and departed this world on August 2, 2025, in Lubbock. His passing leaves a profound absence in the hearts of all who knew him and he will be and remembered fondly for the massive impact he had on his family, friends, and the community.

From an early age, Ferlis demonstrated a love for life that was infectious. He was not only a dedicated individual but also a passionate cook who poured his heart into every dish he prepared. After spending a decade honing his skills in catering, he took a brave step and opened "Big E's BBQ" in 2004. For over 21 years, this beloved establishment became a cornerstone of the community, drawing people in with the delightful aromas and flavors that only Big E could conjure. Ferlis often dreamed that one day, his idol, Patrick Mahomes, would grace his restaurant with a visit, which speaks volumes about his playful spirit and admiration for others.

Ferlis' journey through life was enriched by his passion for sports, as he was an avid fan of Texas Tech Football and the Dallas Cowboys. He often gathered with friends and family to cheer for his teams, always finding joy in those shared moments. His sporting spirit was evident during his youth as he played football at North Texas State University in 1983 and eventually represented Navarro State College before being invited to play for Texas Tech University, from where he graduated with his Bachelors Degree in 1987.

Beyond his culinary talents and sports fandom, Ferlis was a family man at heart. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally Ellis of Lubbock, and two devoted sons, Brandon Thomas and his wife Maria, as well as Trey Ellis, who all carry his legacy forward. He also leaves behind three brothers—Darren Ray Ellis, Derrick Gentry, and Damon Gentry—along with three sisters: Cardell Ellis, Kimberly Griffin, and Debbie McCray, all of whom are proud to recount their shared memories of love and laughter with him. His spirit will live on through his three grandchildren, Brandon Thomas Jr., Zariah Thomas, and Levi Thomas, who were the light of his life.

Ferlis was preceded in death by his cherished daughter, Vianca Thomas, whose memory will forever be a part of his family's story.

The loss of Ferlis "Big E" Ellis Jr. has created a void that will be felt deeply in many lives. His zest for life, unyielding spirit, and warm-heartedness are qualities that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.

A prayer service will be held in The Chapel of Broadway Funeral Directors at 7:00 pm with visitation starting at 10:00 am.  A Celebration of Life honoring "Big E" will be at 10:00 am Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the First Baptist Church with Rev.
