Ennis R Hernandez

With heavy hearts but grateful spirits, the family of Ennis R Hernandez shares the bittersweet news of his peaceful passing on July 31, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on May 27, 1948, in Shelton, Nebraska to Antonio & Benedita Hernandez, Ennis’s vibrant life was a tapestry of hard work, devotion, laughter, and unwavering love for his family and community.

On November 14, 1973, Ennis married the love of his life, Mary Villarreal, in Lubbock, Texas and from his earliest days, Ennis cultivated a diligence and sense of duty that would come to shape his path. For over 40 years, he worked as a truck driver—a career that reflected his steadfastness and integrity. Those long highways and endless roads were not just part of his job, but symbols of the dedication with which he built his life: one mile, one day at a time, always providing for those he cherished.

Ennis was a passionate fan—he cheered on the Denver Broncos, the Texas Rangers, and the Texas Tech Football team with infectious enthusiasm. Whether gathering with loved ones for a nail-biting game, or simply sharing stories of legendary plays, sports offered Ennis a way to unwind, connect, and celebrate life’s excitement. He was also an athlete in his own right, playing softball skillfully for many years. The camaraderie of teammates, the thrill of a well-played game, and the satisfaction of friendly competition were among his greatest joys.

His talents extended beyond the field. Ennis took delight in playing pool, washers, and horseshoes, turning any gathering into a spirited contest filled with laughter. Yet, above all, his favorite pastime was simply being surrounded by family. The pride he took in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was immeasurable, and time spent with them was what he treasured most.

Ennis is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Hernandez; his sons Rene Villarreal, Michael Hernandez (Cindy Hernandez), Ray Hernendez (Kathy Sanchez); his daughters Denise Soliz (Johnny), Christina Hernandez (Labow Rivers); nineteen grandchildren and twenty -five great-grandchildren. 

He is warmly remembered and deeply missed by his surviving family, while being reunited in peace with those who preceded him in death: his brother Benito Hernandez and his sisters Carol Cadena, Lucia Lira, Adelina Medrano, Amelia Guzman, and Helen Valdez. The memories they shared together endure in the hearts of all who loved them.

Services for Mr. Hernandez will be 10:00 am Monday, August 3, 2026, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Martin Pina officiating. A rosary will be held 6:00 pm Sunday, August 2, 2026, in The Chapel of Broadway Funeral Directors with visitation starting at 2:00 pm.
